Northumberland Cheese Company

Northumberland Cheese image

The Northumberland Cheese Company was established in 1984 by Mark Robertson in the green tranquillity of the Rede Valley, which once sheltered the infamous Border Reivers of centuries gone by. Our first cheese, Redesdale, handmade from ewes' milk at our Elsdon Hill Farm, was such a success with the locals that word soon spread, and as our range expanded to include fine cows' and goats' milk cheese, national and indeed international accolades began to pour in.

In 1996 we moved to larger premises in a renovated 19th Century granary on the Blagdon Estate in South Northumberland. Here not only do we have the facilities to marry traditional craftsmanship with modern best practices, we have the space to invite you to enjoy the fruits of our labours in our cheese/coffee shop too.

Birdwatch Northumbria

Birdwatch Northumbria Logo

Birdwatch Northumbria began as an idea in 1994 with an October weekend for friends on Holy Island. Since then we have been organising both weekends and day tours on Northumberland's coast, moors and hills. In 2004 we have added to our programme, pioneering a unique weekend in November of Christian worship, teaching and birdwatching based on Holy Island.

Today the organisation is run by co-founder Mark Winter, a keen birdwatcher with more than 20 years experience of watching local birds and a list in excess of 300 species he has seen regionally. Mark has an enthusiastic interest in local wildlife issues, is an active trustee of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust, and writes regularly on local birds for his village magazine. Perhaps his luckiest birdwatching moment was seeing the Slender-billed Curlew that turned up on the Northumbrian coast in May 1998. This bird is probably the rarest in the world. The species is threatened with extinction, its breeding grounds are unknown, and it has not been verifiably seen since that visit to Northumberland!

Welcome to Shepherds Walks

Welcome to Shepherds Walks

The award winning resource for walks throughout Northumberland, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders. Each and every one of the walking guides has been written and researched by myself, Jon Monks, a local Northumbrian Hill Shepherd.
The walks, which are available from Shepherds Walks, are quite unique, as I have written them all from a Shepherds perspective. As I live and work in the countryside I try to incorporate my knowledge of the outdoors and the way that the landscape is worked into each walking guide. I aim to make every walk a better experience for those exploring these special undiscovered parts of the country.
